101 KLOL 1988 5th annual Rock N’ Roll Auction
Over 7,000 people turned out for the 101 KLOL 1988 5th annual Rock N’ Roll Auction, held Saturday, April 23rd in Houston’s Summit Arena, setting a new attendance record for the charity event.
In the “Runaway Radio” documentary, you see video of Moby announcing his return to Houston and his KLOL hiring by ripping off a 97 Rock hat and putting on a 101 one. The 1988 Rock-N-Roll Auction at the Summit is where that took place!
Over 101 items of rock ‘ n ‘ roll memorabilia were auctioned by celebrity auctioneers, including Grammy nominee Richard Marx, MTV’s Kevin Seal, and Oscar nominee Starship, the official “spokesband” for the Runaway Hotline.
The evening began with a live performance by Houston band XOX.
At 8:00 p.m., the KLOL air staff took the stage to begin the Auction, with assistance from former Eagle guitarist Timothy B. Schmit, Jeff Watson and Brad Gillis of NightRanger, Capitol recording artist John Butcher, Mauro Magellan and Rick Richards of the Georgia Satellites, and resident Texas guitar legend Rocky Hill.
Two and a half hours later, the station had exceeded its projected goal of $30,000 and appeared to be on its way to breaking the $40,000 mark. Highlights of the bidding included:
Michael Jackson’s stage costume from his Japan Tour — $3,550
An autographed Phil Collins Drumhead — $1,000
Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA” Platinum Album — $2,700
Family Ties script, autographed by Michael J. Fox — $750
Ian Anderson’s (Jethro Tull) autographed Flute — $1,200
Autographed Toilet Seat from the Power Station Recording Studio (Cyndi Lauper, Paul Simon, et al) — $550
Neal Schon Guitar — $2,300
Before the night was over, more than $40,000 had been raised to benefit the National Network of Runaway and Youth Services which assisted the families of runaway youth, and operated the 1-800-HIT-HOME hotline.
The event, which was open to the public at no charge, was covered by all major network affiliates and both local independent television stations, as well as the two Houston newspapers.
The 101 KLOL Houston 4th annual Rock ‘N Roll Auction benefiting Houston’s End Hunger Network took place on Easter weekend in 1987 at Houston’s Hard Rock Cafe.
K101-FM, as it was known back then, threw its 3rd Annual Rock ‘N Roll Auction, Saturday, March 15, 1986, at 2 p.m. at the Fizz club located at 6400 Richmond.
