Dayna Steele

Dayna Steele

Dayna Steele is a revered figure in Houston radio, best known for her impactful tenure at the legendary rock station KLOL where her listeners are still called Steeleworkers to this day.

Her journey into broadcasting began on a dare while attending Texas A&M.

To get her foot in the door in Houston radio, Steele accepted a secretary position at Y94 KRYL, a competitor to KLOL. Eager to move into on-air work, she applied multiple times to KLOL and even interviewed with Jackie McCauley, an African-American program director whose presence and voice left a lasting impression. McCauley told Steele she needed more experience—a challenge Steele took to heart.

Steele’s opportunity at KLOL finally arrived in 1982 during the Texas Jam, stepping into a shift after a jock was fired for an on-air gaffe. Starting with late-night weekend slots on Saturday night, 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. shift alone, in the then-rough Montrose neighborhood, often terrified and armed with a 9mm pistol she eventually sold to a cop. The job wasn’t without its dangers, including discovering a dead body outside the studio.

At KLOL, Steele thrived in a dynamic and famously “dysfunctional” yet close-knit family environment.

Through persistence and talent, she climbed the ranks, working every shift and eventually settling into her “God-given time slot”: middays. Steele became a central figure during KLOL’s golden era, thrilled by the arrival of Stevens and Pruett and challenged by the high standards of a tight-knit but competitive crew. She often said that if you weren’t being called into the GM’s office weekly for pushing boundaries, you weren’t doing your job right.

More than just a voice, Steele embodied the spirit of KLOL—showing up at clubs, blood drives, charity events, and always representing Houston with pride. The locally owned station’s deep community ties gave it an edge over corporate competitors like 97 Rock. She credited their “Rock Wars” victory to this local authenticity and the freedom afforded by the Jones family, who let the jocks run wild.

Her time at KLOL was filled with memorable moments—from guitarist Slash of Guns N’ Roses calling bored from a hotel, to being blocked by the formidable front desk secretary Miss Lily, who even rebuked David Crosby post-prison. As mentioned in the “Runaway Radio” documentary, Steele would become friends with the likes of Sammy Hagar, Van Halen, Melissa Etheridge, Joan Jett, King’s X, Cheap Trick, Lyle Lovett, and Carmine Appice, among many other music artists.

Steele, along with her KLOL colleagues, became “rock stars” to their listeners, forging deep connections that made the station the “soundtrack” to pivotal life events. Her dedication to KLOL meant she “lived, breathed, and worked KLOL,” leaving an indelible mark on Houston radio.

Beyond radio, Steele has written many books, including “Rock to the Top” and “Surviving Alzheimer’s With Friends, Facebook, and a Really Big Glass of Wine“. The latter is now a also play called “The Woman in the Mirror.”

Steele is also a member of the Texas Radio Hall of Fame.
